Order Food on Swiggy Using ChatGPT: How It Works

What if you never had to open the Swiggy app to order food? Swiggy has quietly connected its backend to AI assistants, ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini, so you can order food, shop for groceries on Instamart, or book a table on Dineout, just by typing what you want in plain language. We explain what's actually working today, and what still needs a workaround. ChatGPT can now book restaurant tables directly in the US and Canada, a similar use case.

⚡ Quick facts

  • Launched: January 2026, for Food, Instamart and Dineout; announced for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
  • Instamart: First quick-commerce platform in the world on MCP, with 40,000+ products accessible
  • Setup: add a custom connector (for example mcp.swiggy.com/food), then log in with your Swiggy phone number and OTP
  • Payments: UPI (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or QR) since July 2026, with cash as the fallback

What's actually connected

In January 2026, YourStory and Storyboard18 reported, Swiggy became one of the first Indian consumer brands to launch on Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that lets AI assistants connect to real apps and take real actions, not just talk about them, across Food, Instamart and Dineout. Swiggy says Instamart is the first quick-commerce platform on MCP, with more than 40,000 products available to assistants. Each service has its own connector address: mcp.swiggy.com/food, /instamart and /dineout, according to Restaurant India.

How to set it up

  1. Open Settings in your AI app. Custom connectors are clearest in ChatGPT and Claude; check whether your plan supports them.
  2. Look for a section called Connectors or Add Custom Connector.
  3. Paste in the Swiggy address for the service you want, such as https://mcp.swiggy.com/food.
  4. Log in with your Swiggy-registered phone number (OTP) to link your account and saved addresses.

Once connected, you can type something like "Order ingredients for Thai green curry" or "Get snacks and drinks for a match-viewing party," and the AI searches, compares options, builds the cart, applies the best available offers, confirms your address, and places the order.

What to know before you try it

This isn't yet a simple, one-tap feature for everyday users. Setting up the connector requires connector or developer settings inside your AI app, which can feel technical if you've never done it before. Gemini was named at launch, but Outlook Business noted it may not support third-party connectors the same way, so ChatGPT and Claude are the safer bets.

Payments have changed since launch. Orders were cash-only at first, but on July 10, 2026 Swiggy's developer blog announced in-chat UPI for Food, Instamart and Dineout: on a phone you pick GPay, PhonePe or Paytm, on a desktop you scan a QR code, and cash remains the fallback. The order stays pending until payment succeeds, and Swiggy tells assistants never to ask for your UPI ID. Separately, Swiggy's voice ordering with Sarvam AI uses Razorpay's UPI Reserve Pay.

Our take: a two-minute check before your first AI order

We walked through the flow Swiggy describes for assistants. The agent builds a cart, shows payment options, places the order as pending, and only finalizes it once your payment goes through. That gives you three places to catch a mistake:

  1. Before checkout: ask the assistant to list every item with its quantity and price, and the delivery address it picked. Assistants can pick the wrong pack size or a similar-sounding item.
  2. At payment: the amount in your UPI app is what you actually pay. If it differs from the total the assistant showed, cancel in the UPI app.
  3. After ordering: ask the assistant to track the order, or open the Swiggy app, which shows the same order.

A worked example: “groceries for a Thai green curry for four” could reasonably come back as curry paste, coconut milk, vegetables, basil and rice, but the assistant decides the quantities. For a planned shop the chat route saves time; for a repeat order of things you buy every week, the app's reorder button is still faster.

Red flags: an assistant asking for your UPI ID or PIN in the chat (Swiggy's own guidance says agents should never ask for a UPI ID), or a connector address that is not on mcp.swiggy.com.

Safety and privacy considerations

Connecting an assistant to a delivery account gives it access to your saved addresses and order ability. Review what permissions the connector asks for, confirm the cart and delivery address before the order is placed, and remove the connector from your AI app's settings if you stop using it. Now that UPI is supported, a wrong order can also mean a wrong charge, so read the cart before you approve the payment in your UPI app.

What this says about where assistants are heading

The significance is less the food ordering itself than the pattern: an open standard that lets an assistant act inside other apps. Once a service exposes its actions this way, any compatible assistant can use them. Booking and ordering are the early examples, and the same approach is now being used for reservations abroad, as in ChatGPT's restaurant reservations.

When the normal app is still better

For a quick repeat order, the Swiggy app is likely still faster than typing a request and confirming a cart. The assistant route makes the most sense when you want to plan something open-ended, such as ingredients for a recipe, or when you are already working inside the assistant. A similar idea inside a retailer's own app is Instacart's Clementine assistant.

Frequently asked questions

Will the assistant ask for my UPI ID or PIN?

It should not. Swiggy tells assistants never to ask for a UPI ID; you approve the payment in your own UPI app or by scanning a QR code, and you enter your PIN only there. Treat any request for your UPI ID or PIN in the chat as a red flag.

Can I really order Swiggy food through ChatGPT?

Yes. Swiggy's MCP connectors let compatible assistants, most clearly ChatGPT and Claude, place real orders on Food, Instamart and Dineout.

How do I set it up?

Add Swiggy as a connector in your AI app's settings and log in with your Swiggy-registered phone number.

Can I pay online this way?

Yes, since July 2026. You can pay by UPI through GPay, PhonePe or Paytm on a phone, or by scanning a QR code on a desktop, and cash remains the fallback. The order is only confirmed after the payment succeeds.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Not fully. It currently needs developer/connector settings enabled, so it's more suited to comfortable tech users for now.
