Truecaller Family Protection: Stop Scam Calls for Your Parents
Scam calls, from fake bank officials, "digital arrest" threats, and courier frauds, keep getting more convincing, and it's often older family members who are targeted. Truecaller's Family Protection feature does something genuinely useful about this: it lets someone tech-savvy in the family remotely hang up a call their parent or relative is on, in real time, the moment it looks like a scam. We explain how it actually works.
โก Quick facts
- What it does: Lets a family admin remotely hang up a scam call in real time
- Safety Circle: Up to 5 people, one designated as admin
- Live in India since: March 2026, after tests in Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, Kenya
- Coming next: AI auto-disconnect on scam keywords, still in exploration, not live yet

How the "Safety Circle" works
Inside the Truecaller app, you can create a Safety Circle of up to five people. One member, usually whoever is most comfortable with tech, becomes the family admin, effectively acting as the household's own scam-protection lead. The admin gets notified when another circle member receives a call Truecaller has flagged as suspicious.
The standout feature: Remote Call Hang-Up
If a family member is currently on a call that looks like a scam, the admin can remotely end that call in real time, straight from their own phone, without needing to call the person or talk them through hanging up while they're mid-conversation with a scammer. Truecaller first tested this in Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya before rolling it out globally, including India, in March 2026, with India being the company's single largest market.
What's still coming: AI auto-disconnect
Truecaller is also exploring a fully automatic version: using AI to listen for scam-associated keywords like "digital arrest" and disconnecting the call on its own, with no human needing to intervene. As of now, this is still in the exploration phase and not a feature you can turn on yet. Remote Call Hang-Up via the Safety Circle is what's actually live today.
How to set it up
Install Truecaller on your own phone and on your parent's phone, then create the Safety Circle in the app and choose who acts as admin. Agree beforehand when the admin may hang up a call, and tell your parent the feature exists, so an unexpected disconnect does not cause alarm.
Scam red flags to teach family
- Anyone claiming to be police, a bank or a courier and demanding urgent action.
- "Digital arrest" threats or demands to stay on the line and not tell anyone.
- Requests for OTPs, PINs or to install a remote-access app.
The simplest rule: hang up, then call the organisation back on its official number.
What the feature cannot do
It depends on Truecaller flagging the call and on the admin noticing in time, so it is a safety net, not a guarantee. Regular conversation with your family about scams remains the best protection.
