OpenAI Just Partnered With India's Biggest News Publishers on ChatGPT

In the first week of September 2026, two of India's largest media groups signed content deals with OpenAI. Bennett, Coleman & Co (BCCL), publisher of The Times of India and The Economic Times, and the Indian Express Group, which announced on September 8, will have their journalism surface inside ChatGPT with attribution and links. Updated October 30, 2026: here is what changes for readers, what the deals leave out, and why some media analysts are sceptical.

⚡ Quick facts

  • Who signed: BCCL (The Times of India, The Economic Times) and the Indian Express Group (The Indian Express, The Financial Express)
  • What ChatGPT shows: summaries or excerpts with the source name and a link to the full story, not whole articles
  • Languages: the Express deal covers English, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati
  • Money: financial terms were not disclosed by either group
  • Editorial control: both publishers say OpenAI has no say in what they cover

What was announced

Per MediaNama, BCCL's deal covers its English and Indian-language publications, both live news and archives. When users ask about related topics, ChatGPT can show summaries or excerpts with attribution and a link back. The Indian Express Group's deal, reported by Social Samosa, covers The Indian Express, The Financial Express and its business titles across seven languages. Both groups will also explore OpenAI tools for archive search, research, translation and data analysis, subject to their own editorial policies.

What the deals do not say

Neither side disclosed fees, revenue sharing or contract length. Coverage also does not say whether the content will be used to train OpenAI's models, as opposed to being shown in answers. The deals sit beside a live court fight: news agency ANI sued OpenAI in the Delhi High Court in November 2024 over the use of its content for training. An interim ruling declined to block OpenAI, and ANI has appealed.

The sceptical view

Storyboard18 quotes media consultants who argue these "discovery" deals are really licensing deals, and that AI referrals bring publishers very little traffic: under 1% of page views by the estimates they cite. The concern is that readers get the answer inside ChatGPT and never visit the publisher. The counter-argument is that content has to go where readers are, and licensing income can offset falling search traffic. Similar OpenAI deals with global publishers such as News Corp and Axel Springer follow the same pattern.
