ChatGPT's New "Writing Style" Feature Wants to Sound Like You, Explained
Writing Style lets ChatGPT draft in your voice by learning from writing in apps you connect, such as Gmail and Slack. It surfaced as a test in early September 2026 and OpenAI announced it for ChatGPT Work on September 7. We explain what it does, who can turn it on, and what to check before connecting your accounts.
โก Quick facts
- Spotted in testing: early September 2026, with an onboarding screen listing Slack, Google Drive, Notion and Gmail
- Announced: September 7, 2026, by OpenAI's ChatGPT account on X, as part of ChatGPT Work
- Apps at launch: Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint, according to launch coverage
- Who gets it: paid ChatGPT plans with ChatGPT Work access; set up on the web, then applies on web and mobile
- Where to find it: Settings โ Personalization โ Writing Style
What Writing Style does
Writing Style lets ChatGPT draft in your voice by reading writing you have already done in apps you connect, instead of you pasting samples or repeating tone instructions in every chat. The onboarding screen first reported by BleepingComputer put it plainly: ChatGPT will write in your voice by referencing examples from your connected apps.
OpenAI's own pitch focused on small habits rather than broad tone: favourite phrases, a very specific sign-off, and capitalisation quirks. The idea is that a reply drafted by ChatGPT should need fewer edits before it sounds like something you would actually send.
From test to launch
The feature first surfaced in early September 2026 as a limited test, with an onboarding screen that grouped sources into Messaging (Slack), Documents (Google Drive and Notion) and Email (Gmail). On September 7, OpenAI's ChatGPT account announced it as part of ChatGPT Work. Launch coverage from Business Today and AlternativeTo lists Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint as the supported apps; Notion, seen in the test build, was not in those launch lists.
Who can use it and how to turn it on
According to RuntimeWire and Business Today, setup is available on the web to paid ChatGPT plans that include ChatGPT Work. Once it is enabled, the style applies to drafts on both web and mobile.
- Connect the apps you want ChatGPT to learn from (for example Gmail or Slack).
- On the ChatGPT website, open Settings โ Personalization โ Writing Style.
- Choose the option you want, then ask for a draft and compare it with something you wrote yourself.
On work accounts, your administrator decides which connected apps are allowed at all, so the option may be limited or missing even on a paid plan.
How it differs from Claude Styles
Anthropic's Claude offers Styles, which you build by describing a style or uploading writing samples yourself. Writing Style skips that step by reading what is already in your accounts. That is more convenient, but it means giving ChatGPT ongoing read access to real email, chat and documents rather than a handful of samples you picked.
Our take: a privacy check before you connect anything
The feature is only as good as the writing it learns from, and the risk is in what else that writing contains. Before turning it on, we would run through this list:
- Pick the cleanest source. Sent email is usually the best sample of your voice. A busy Slack workspace mixes your messages with other people's and with confidential threads.
- Check your data controls. In ChatGPT's data controls, see whether "Improve the model for everyone" is on for your account; on business workspaces, check what your admin has set.
- Ask before using a work account. Client email, HR threads and legal documents are often covered by contracts or policies that do not allow third-party AI access.
- Test with a low-stakes draft. Ask for a reply to a routine email and compare it line by line with one you wrote. If it copies a sign-off or phrase that only fits one person, rewrite before sending.
- Know how to switch it off. You can disconnect an app or turn the setting off in Personalization at any time.
If you only want ChatGPT to match your tone, a few pasted samples or custom instructions still work without connecting any account.

Writing Style is a ChatGPT Work feature that drafts text in your voice by learning from writing in apps you connect, picking up habits such as favourite phrases, sign-offs and capitalisation.
Which apps does Writing Style use?
Launch coverage lists Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint. An earlier test build also showed Notion, but it was not in the launch lists.
Who can use ChatGPT Writing Style?
OpenAI announced it on September 7, 2026 for ChatGPT Work. Reports say it is available to paid ChatGPT plans with ChatGPT Work access, set up on the web and then applied on web and mobile.
