What Gemini Spark for Google Photos does

Gemini Spark is Google's personal AI agent. Unveiled at Google I/O in May 2026, it is built to carry out multi-step tasks for you, and it already worked with Gmail and Google Calendar. On September 3, 2026, Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yair announced that Spark can now work with Google Photos as well, so a single request can search your library, make edits and organise the results.

The Google Photos skills

According to Android Police, Spark's Photos skills cover five kinds of job:

Who can use it and how to start

The rollout is narrow. Social Samosa reports it is limited to eligible Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States, in English, arriving over several weeks. Android Police says it works in the Gemini app on mobile and on the web, with the desktop app to follow later. Google has not given a timeline for other countries or languages.

To start, connect Google Photos to Gemini, switch on Spark in the Gemini app, and ask Spark which Google Photos tasks it supports.

Our take: start small, review before anything is shared

Searching and editing are low risk, because Spark keeps your originals. The step that deserves care is sharing: once an album link goes out by email or message, it has left your library. A sensible first test looks like this:

  1. Ask for a private album first: “Make a private album of the best 30 photos from my Goa trip in March, no duplicates.”
  2. Review the album yourself. Check for screenshots, documents or photos of other people that you would not want to share.
  3. Only then share it, and check the recipient list and whether the album lets others add photos.
  4. Be careful with recurring tasks. A weekly auto-shared album keeps sending new photos without you looking at each batch; keep recurring albums private unless you are sure.
  5. Check connected apps. In Gemini's settings, review which apps Spark can reach and disconnect any you do not need.

Spark is useful for the dull jobs people put off, such as clearing duplicates or pulling one event out of thousands of photos. Anything personal that leaves your account should still get a human look first.
