Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live, Explained
Google has made three of its busiest apps talk back. Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live use Gemini so you can question your inbox, draft a document or capture a to-do list by voice. We explain what each does, which plan and phone you need, and the requests worth trying first.
⚡ Quick facts
- Rollout: began the week of September 3, 2026, after a preview at Google I/O in May
- Gmail Live: ask your inbox questions out loud; Android and iOS, described as a beta
- Docs Live: talk through a document and get a draft; Android and iOS
- Keep Live: turn a spoken brain dump into an organised note or list; Android only
- Plans: Gmail and Keep Live need Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra; Docs Live needs Pro or Ultra
What each “Live” feature does
Google started rolling out three voice features built on Gemini in the week of September 3, 2026, after previewing them at I/O in May. All three replace typing with a back-and-forth conversation, as Droid Life put it: Google wants you to just talk to its apps.
- Gmail Live: ask questions about your inbox out loud, such as when a booking is or what a thread decided, and follow up without retyping. Google describes it as a beta.
- Docs Live: explain what you want to write and Gemini drafts it in Google Docs, then refine it by talking.
- Keep Live: ramble through ideas or a to-do list and Keep turns it into an organised note or checklist.
Who can use it
According to Android Authority, Gmail Live and Keep Live need a Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra subscription, while Docs Live needs Pro or Ultra. Free accounts are not eligible. Gmail Live and Docs Live work on Android and iOS; Keep Live is Android only. The features are in English and rolling out gradually worldwide, so they may take a while to appear even on a qualifying plan. Google says (Analytics Insight has the details) that Google Workspace business customers are next, with no date given.
How to find it
Google controls the rollout from its side, so there is no setting to force it on. Once it reaches your account, look for a Live or voice option in the mobile apps. Updating Gmail, Docs and Keep from your app store is the only thing you can do to speed it up.
Why voice, and why now
The features fit Google's wider push to make Gemini conversational across its products, the same shift behind Gemini Live on phones. In effect, as coverage such as Runtime Wire describes, Google is moving its productivity apps from search boxes to dialogue. The catch is that the most useful parts sit behind paid plans, which is how Google is pushing people toward its AI subscriptions.
Our take: five good first requests
Voice works best for tasks that are slow to type but easy to say. Try these first:
- Gmail Live: “What did I agree with the landlord about the deposit?” It saves digging through a long thread.
- Gmail Live: “Which emails this week need a reply from me?” Then check the list yourself before trusting it.
- Docs Live: “Draft a one-page project update with three sections: done, blocked, next.” Structure first, then talk through each section.
- Keep Live: dictate everything for a trip or a move, then ask for it grouped into a checklist.
- Any of them: treat answers as a draft. Gemini can misread a thread or miss an email, so verify dates and amounts before acting.
