Google's Free AI Student Offer: US vs. the Rest of the World
Google is giving eligible college students a year of free access to its AI plans, but not everyone gets the same deal. Depending on where you study, you'll land on either Google AI Pro or Google AI Plus, and the two plans are genuinely different in what they include. We lay out the actual breakdown, so you know what to expect before you sign up.
โก Quick facts
- US students: Google AI Pro free for a year (normally $19.99/month), with 5TB storage, 4x usage
- Everyone else (140+ countries): Google AI Plus free for a year, with 400GB storage, 2x usage
- Excluded entirely: Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong, Tunisia
- Sign up at: one.google.com/ai-student, or the Gemini app's student hub
If you're studying in the US: Google AI Pro
US college students get Google AI Pro, normally priced at $19.99/month, free for a year. It includes:
- 4x higher usage limits in Gemini compared to the free tier
- Access to Gemini Spark
- Integration with Gmail and Google Docs
- 5 TB of Google Drive storage
- Google Health Premium
If you're studying anywhere else: Google AI Plus
Students in more than 140 other countries get a different, smaller plan, Google AI Plus, free for a year. It includes:
- 2x higher usage limits in Gemini (vs. 4x for the US plan)
- Access to Gemini Omni
- 400 GB of storage (vs. 5 TB for the US plan)
A handful of markets are left out of this international offer entirely, based on Google's own announcement: Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong, and Tunisia (Canada and the others are excluded even though they're outside the US, and the US itself has its own separate Pro offer above).
How to sign up
- Go to one.google.com/ai-student or open the student hub inside the Gemini app.
- Verify your student status through the flow provided.
- Claim your plan: Pro if you're in the US, Plus everywhere else it's offered.
You'll need to redeem the offer by December 31, 2026 to lock in your free year, so don't sit on it if you're eligible.
Pro vs Plus at a glance
- Usage limits: 4x the free Gemini tier on Pro, 2x on Plus.
- Storage: 5 TB on Pro, 400 GB on Plus.
- Extras: Pro adds Gemini Spark, Gmail and Docs integration and Google Health Premium; Plus lists Gemini Omni.
- Who gets it: Pro for US students, Plus for students in the 140+ other eligible countries.
Which difference matters most
For most coursework the usage limit is the one you will feel, because it decides how many long chats, document uploads and research sessions you can run before hitting a cap. Storage matters if you already keep photos and files in Google Drive: 400 GB is plenty for notes and slides, but a large photo library can fill it. If you are on the Plus plan, check what you already store before assuming the offer replaces a paid storage plan.
Before you claim
Redeem by December 31, 2026. Have your student verification ready, since that step depends on your institution. Our sources do not say what the plan costs once the free year ends, so note the end date and check the price in your Google account settings a few weeks before it does, in case it renews into a paid plan.
