Apple's September 2026 Event: The iPhone Duo Foldable, an "Always-Listening" Watch, and AI in Everything
On September 9, 2026, Apple held its "Surprise and Shine" event, the first keynote led by John Ternus, who became CEO on September 1. The headline was the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, which went on sale on October 23. The quieter story was AI: an Apple Watch that can transcribe and summarise what it hears, an iPhone that signs photos at capture to prove they are real, and a Health app that scores your readiness each day. Updated October 30, 2026, with launch dates confirmed.

iPhone Duo: Apple's first foldable
Per Apple's announcement, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB to 2TB of storage. It has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, ships with iOS 27.1, and went on sale on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions. That price is above most Android foldables, so Apple is betting on its software and ecosystem rather than on value. The Duo runs Apple Intelligence and the new Siri features from iOS 27.
The watch that listens: Audio Intelligence
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 add features Apple groups as Audio Intelligence. Live Rewind replays and transcribes the last few seconds of audio around you, and Siri Recap summarises meetings and conversations. Both arrive in beta in late 2026 and need an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone 16 or later. Apple says the features do not create or store audio recordings and do not identify speakers, but they are still always-on microphones near other people, which raises consent questions in workplaces and in places with two-party recording laws.
Proving a photo is real: Apple Reference Image
On the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Reference Image cryptographically signs sensor data when a photo is taken, so it can later be shown to be an unedited camera capture rather than AI-generated. Apple says it is opt-in and that availability is limited in China and the EU at launch. The idea is similar to the industry's content-credential efforts: it does not detect fakes, it gives genuine photos a way to prove themselves.
Health: Readiness and Health Age
The redesigned Health app, described in Apple's health announcement, uses Apple Intelligence to give a daily Readiness score from 0 to 10 with one of four recommendations, from Recover to Go For It, plus a Health Age estimate that requires an Apple Watch. These are wellness estimates, not medical diagnoses. Fox News and Business Today covered the event as Ternus's debut.
Our take: which AI features matter
- Most useful: Apple Reference Image. As AI images spread, a camera-level proof of authenticity is valuable, if apps and platforms actually display it.
- Most sensitive: Audio Intelligence. Useful for meetings, but check local recording laws and tell people when Siri Recap is on.
- Least proven: Readiness and Health Age. Treat them as trends to watch, not targets to chase.
- The Duo itself: the AI features are the same as on other iOS 27 iPhones. Buy it for the form factor, not for exclusive AI.
- Check availability: several features are beta, region-limited or need recent hardware.
