Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp: Free AI Help for Small Businesses in India

If you run a small business and use WhatsApp to talk to customers, Meta has a new tool worth knowing about: Meta Business Agent, an AI assistant that can handle customer questions, bookings, and basic sales tasks on its own — 24 hours a day. It was tested in India for nearly two years before its wider rollout. Here's what it actually does.

What it can actually do

Meta Business Agent can answer customer questions about your products, pricing, discounts, and shipping; recommend products; book appointments; and qualify sales leads — routing the conversation to a real person only when needed. It's trained on your own business's information, so answers are specific to what you actually sell, not generic replies.

Why this matters for small businesses in India

This kind of always-on customer service used to require a call center or expensive software — out of reach for most small shops and businesses. WhatsApp unveiled the India rollout at its Business Summit in Mumbai specifically framing it this way: automated, 24/7 customer engagement for businesses that could never previously afford it. Over a million businesses globally are already using earlier versions of Meta's business AI tools.

What it costs

Meta Business Agent launched free for businesses to use. Tiered pricing is coming through WhatsApp Business Premium subscriptions for larger-scale usage, with token-based pricing (for bigger businesses) working out to roughly a few cents per customer conversation. For a typical small business, the free tier is likely to be sufficient to start.
